Programme:
SCHUMANN - Fantasiestücke Op. 73
BRAHMS - Clarinet Sonata in F minor Op.120 No.1
MESSAIEN - Abyss of the birds from Quartet for the End of Time
DEBUSSY - Première rapsodie
SAINT-SAËNS - Clarinet Sonata in E flat Op.167
PIERNÉ - Canzonetta Op. 19
MESSAGER - Solo de concours

A star pairing of Britain’s finest clarinet virtuoso with one of our most imaginative and stimulating pianists. Their programme is virtually a conspectus of a century’s clarinet-and-piano highlights ranging from Schumann’s lyrical and passionate Fantasy Pieces of 1849 to one of Brahms’s late-flowering masterpieces for Richard Mühlfeld of the legendary Meiningen orchestra.

It then moves on to a French feast for the ear from old veteran Saint-Saëns at the end of his life, via some competition fireworks, to Olivier Messiaen as prisoner of war in 1941.

Belcea String Quartet
and LONDON WINDS

Programme:
BEDFORD - Of the Air
(World premiere - Commissioned by Helen Bishop-Stephens and Patrick Bailey)
BRAHMS - String Quartet in A minor Op. 51 No. 2
SCHUBERT - Octet in F D803

About this concert:
A dream partnership between members of London Winds and the Belcea Quartet promises to give a performance of a lifetime in Schubert’s genial and spaciously proportioned Octet.
Schubert was a prominent inspiration when Brahms came to tackle several chamber music forms, and his lyricism haunts this Second String Quartet.
Listen out especially for further fruit of the Wigmore’s alliance with its inaugural Composer in Residence, Luke Bedford.
